Wera Kraftform Kompakt 50 Bit-Holding Screwdriver Set

This is the set that sold me on Wera screwdrivers, and the reason is the Rapidaptor chuck. It is the best quarter-inch bit lock I have come across. DeWalt makes a spring-loaded one that works fine, but the Rapidaptor is more precise and more positive. Push the sleeve toward the tip to drop a bit and it stays open in that position instead of fighting you. Set the next bit in and it engages on its own, and the chuck locks down tight. Bits go in and out fast, one-handed, and they do not wobble once seated.

The handle has a couple of tricks beyond the chuck. The blade telescopes, so you can run it short for control or extend it for reach, and it drops all the way into the handle when you want the shortest possible driver in a tight spot. The blade is also a bayonet, so you can pull it and run a different length in the same handle.

Bits are where Wera really shines. These are clearly precision made, and the smart part of this assortment is the Torx: every Torx bit is a security Torx, with the hole drilled for tamper-proof screws. They still drive standard Torx perfectly, so you get both in one set and never carry a separate security kit for the one oddball screw. The folding case keeps the whole thing together, which is half of why it earns its spot.

Where it stops: the handle is small. I have big hands, and this is not a driver I want to lean on for real torque. For anything that is going to fight back I reach for a full-size handle or an impact driver. But for assembly and the hundred smaller jobs, this is the one I grab, and because it all lives in one case it is the easiest thing in the world to throw in a bag and have everything with you.
